If you are looking for a way to spend money that you haven’t earned yet, there is a disconnect.
hold
Until you start measuring your financial strength, you will always be tempted to spend whatever money you happen to have.
antishopping
We grumble at how long clutter clearing takes, but there is no inherent reason why clutter clearing should go faster than shopping. Both involve similar decisions and similar physical movements.
the new blindfold
If you have a habit of buying things to distract yourself from your past, it reaches its logical conclusion when you start buying things to distract yourself from your clutter.
gear
When you slow down your shopping, you can slow down your clutter clearing. Then maybe you can get more sleep.
burn rate
You might need to have a quantity of something on hand, so look at the rate of movement. How much of something do you use in a day or a year? How long will it take until you use up what you have?
shopping trance
The world is coded to put you in a trance state in which you are ready to give up your money. Get out of the trance before you decide what to buy.
ship comes in
For the true cost of a purchase, include the costs of getting the item home and of disposing of it at the end of its useful life.
upgrade
When shopping for clothing to give to others, don’t look for replacements for their favorite things. Instead look to replace their least favorite things.
hanging on
When you buy clothing, make sure it is something you will want to wear and something that will look good in your closet.
level up
When you have to go to the trouble of buying something new to replace something that is no longer good enough for you, think big. Look for a chance to put in something that is much better than what was there before.
consuming
When you buy food you effectively commit to the decision to either eat it or throw it away.
not sold in any store
If it is hard to find anyone who sells the thing you want to buy, it gives you a second chance to consider whether you really want it.
make room
If it seems that you are buying too many things, but you are not spending much money, it could simply be that you are neglecting to throw away the things that your new purchases replace.
