work day

Finish today’s work today. More work will arrive tomorrow.

fighting through resistance

If you work a to-do list in the most natural way, you complete the items for which you have little or no resistance first, then the items that present moderate resistance. Before long all that is left is a list full of resistance.

least but not least

Something that takes only a short time can be the most important thing you do all day.

. . .

At some point you reach the end of the instructions. Then you proceed on your own.

untangled

Distractions take up your time, so it is a sensible investment to spend a comparable amount of time removing distractions.

maze

Stick with the difficult problem that comes up; or set it aside and move on to something easier. There is no wrong way to move through a set of challenges.

opening

There is a way to do each thing you are imagining, but you might not be able to see it until you get the plans, doubts, worries, theories, and compromises out of the way.

skunkworks

When no one is thinking about what you’re working on, then there is nothing to explain.

undriven

A state in which you are not bothered by anything is not a state in which you are qualified to drive a car.

orthodoxy

A different technique or strategy could work twice as well. This is why it is important to know the origin of the techniques you rely on.

broadcast

Tell everyone about your results only when it makes the work easier.

contingent

Keep moving forward just in case you survive the current worry.

daily news

Read enough news to know what you need to know, then return your attention to your work.

committed

Sometimes finishing a project is less work than cleaning up the materials you were planning to use.

go do

Success depends on subtleties. To smile, take a deep breath, and repeat one-syllable words to yourself can help, but it is not enough.

conscious change

If you want the work you are doing to change you in a lasting way, you have to get out of that trance.

freeze frame

The world does not stand still while you work your way through your own plans.

pure and simple

Raising your standards doesn’t necessarily mean you will be working harder. Often, higher standards make your life simpler.

unseen

Visibility usually makes a problem easier to solve, but not always. There are also problems that you can solve only when you are not looking at them.
